NAME

Prince William Sound

Version 1.0
============================
STORYLINE

Prince William Sound is a sound of the Gulf of Alaska on the south coast of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located on the east side of the Kenai Peninsula. Its largest port is Valdez, at the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Other settlements on the sound, which contains numerous small islands, include Cordova and Whittier plus the Alaska native villages of Chenega and Tatitlek.

James Cook entered Prince William Sound in 1778 and named it Sandwich Sound, after his patron the Earl of Sandwich. The editors of Cook's maps changed the name to Prince William Sound, in honor of Prince William, who would later become King William IV. The Sound was named in 1778 by George Vancouver to honour George III's third son Prince William Henry, then aged thirteen and serving as a midshipman in the Royal Navy.

Most of the land surrounding Prince William Sound is part of the Chugach National Forest, the second largest national forest in the U.S. Prince William Sound is ringed by the steep and glaciated Chugach Mountains. The coastline is convoluted, with many islands and fjords, several of which contain tidewater glaciers. The principal barrier islands forming the sound are Montague Island, Hinchinbrook Island, and Hawkins Island.

A 1964 tsunami, a result of the Good Friday Earthquake, killed a number of Chugach villagers in the coastal village of Chenega, as well as destroying the town of Valdez.

In 1989, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef after leaving Valdez, causing a large oil spill, which resulted in massive damage to the environment, including the killing of around 250,000 seabirds, nearly 3,000 sea otters, 300 harbour seals, 250 bald eagles and up to 22 killer whales.

Scenery Specific Notes and Highlights

Within this scenery package you will find many new locations that are now added to Prince William Sound that are intended to give RTMM users new places to go discover while flying or boating inside the sound. These locations are based on real world spots but are not exact duplications of these places. Just approximations using given objects and my imagination.

This scenery also uses seasonal scenery so you'll need to install the RTMM Season Switcher Utility by Rod Jackson you haven't already.

Location Highlights

Sawmill Bay

I've added several buildings and other objects to the small settlement of Sawmill Bay near the Chenega Bay Airstrip. (C05)

The Armin F. Koernig (AFK) Hatchery

AFK is also located in Sawmill Bay, just west of Sawmill Bay Settlement and is the first PWSAC owned hatchery located at Port San Juan on Evans Island in Prince William Sound, approximately 90 air miles west of Cordova. The original hatchery was converted from an existing salmon cannery located on the site in 1974 and designed as a pink and chum salmon hatchery. The late summer chum program was not as sucessful as the pink program and was discontinued in 1986. AFK was the only hatchery in the direct flow of oil spilled from the Exxon Valdez (EVOS) in March 1989. Sawmill Bay was protected with floating oil spill boom as the young fry from the hatchery were outmigrating. The effects of the EVOS around AFK and in Prince William Sound are still being investigated. In 1991, the hatchery building was rebuilt with design changes to make water usage more efficient. The lake above AFK is extremely small which forces the hatchery at times to use water twice and, in extremes, recycle 95% of the water through a complex recycle system. AFK currently produces 160 million pink salmon.

There's a permanent staff of six on-site year-round, with a seasonal staff of 14 during the summer. All the Hatchery Managers enjoy giving tours, showing off their hatcheries and the fish, so stop by it you are in the area.

Hinchinbrook Island - There are several scenery enhancements located on this island that are highlighted below.

Johnstone Point Airstrip - (2AK5) Look for a lot of birds nesting near the Johnstone Point airstrip on the north tip of Hinchinbrook island. I added trees and bushes to the surrounding terrain and the birds will be flying into and out of these nesting spots while at the airstrip.

Nuchek Village - Located on the west shoreline of Hinchinbrook Island, this location has several abandoned buildings left to discover. Helicopter, floatplane or boat visitors can easily find this spot but there is even a beach to land on for seasoned bush pilots.

Hinchinbrook Island Radio Tower - Located on a hill side near Boswell Bay on the east shore of Hinchinbrook Island, this location is for the helicopter pilots and will challenge their skills.

Boswell Bay Airstrip - (AK97) This airstrip is built into the surrounding terrain and has a sharp incline that makes this airstrip a challenge to land at and take off from. I've added several airstrip buildings and other objects to the airstrip. Also, there's a small settlement nearby on the top of a hill to discover and near the shore, you'll find a floatplane dock and boardwalk that leads onshore. Just offshore of Boswell Bay airstrip is the shipwreck at Strawberry Channel.

Hinchinbrook Island Cabins - There are several cabins to discover on this island.

Hawkins Island - Two cabins are placed near each other on Hawkins Island. You can find these in the small inlet called Canoe Passage along the north shore on the island.

Chenega Island - Look for the small lodge located along the southern shore of this island.

Eshamy Bay Lodge - There's a small homestead inside Eshamy Bay Lodge that caters to tourists. Seaplane or boat visitors only.

Perry Island Seaplane Base - (PYL) Perry Island has a cove on the southern tip that has a small protective mooring point for seaplanes and boats.

REQUIRED SCENERY

============================
IMPORTANT SCENERY NOTES:

This scenery was made to fit within the ORBX/FTX payware "Southern Alaska" scenery region. You will need to have that installed in FSX or Prepar3D to use this scenery properly. DO NOT use this scenery with the default FSX or P3D scenery or any other payware such as Ultimate Terrain, as it will probably not align correctly. This scenery is an enhancement to an area inside the "Southern Alaska" region. These scenery addon's are for use with FSX, FSX with DX10 or Prepar3D.

No ORBX objects were used in the creation of this scenery.

SEASONAL TREES AND FOLIAGE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (This Scenery is able to use the RTMM Season Switcher)

The latest version of the RTMM Season Switcher is available as a link on the download page for this scenery package as it is located on the RTMM website. Please download the RTMM Scenery Switcher using that link and read the included readme file for detailed installation and operating instructions

There are four seasons and you can also select no season which will take you to the summer season as adefault.

When you run the RTMM Season Switcher.exe shortcut for the season you plan to visit, some of the objects <(e.g. trees, grasses, ground cover, etc.)> may change accordingly and the scenery, in most cases, will be displayed to match the season better. When you're ready to change seasons, simply re-run the RTMM Season Switcher.exe shortcut and make your new choice as explained in the RTMM Season Switcher readme file.

If you never run the RTMM Season Switcher, the default (no season chosen) scenery will display and, though it will look okay in any season, it will not have the integrated look and special seasonal objects that a specific seasonal choice might provide.

Remember to switch your simulator season to match your season selection here.
